Volunteer works to teach English at
Woldi Local Children’s Center
2-1 Go Eun-ji
This year I had a chance to do volunteer works to teach english to
children at woldi local children’s center. A local children’s center is a
facility that provides children with welfare services such as education, art,
music and counseling. There are 187 groups in Incheon, four of them are
in Jung-gu. One of the places I visited was the woldi local children’s
center. Currently many middle school students who need services of this
center.
I go there once a week and teach english to children. The first child I
taught was a cute middle school freshman named Hiju. When I did
volunteer work first, I wondered whether the child would follow me or I
could teach well. However, unlike my concern, Hiju kept my mind wide open and we had
a really enjoyable lesson. Although I was not good at it, I did my best as long as I could.
Especially it remains in memory that she told me about her school life, friends and
concerns. I think studying is important to middle school students, but I think school life
is also important. So sometimes we talked about her school life and her concerns.
When she sees me smiling, I’m also happy.
Hiju quitted the center due to her personal reasons, then I taught a middle school
freshman, Jungi. I concerned that boys might follow my lesson, but that was my
excessive concern. Although Jungi was a naughty student when he played with his
friends, he was nice when he was in class. Jungi also came out every week, took the
lessons and we prepared for the performance assessment together.
I felt a lot of things while volunteering at the local children’s center. I realized again
how fruitful sharing my knowledge to children is. Teaching children and talking with
them, I got to know teaching plays an important role in children who are growing up
towards their dreams. And I felt that I could affect children’s future, I knew how
important teaching children at this critical period is. That was a great motivation for me
to be a teacher. Of course, sometimes children did not listen and sometimes they did not
want to take a lesson. Often I felt so exhausted, and I thought I had taken the lesson
nobody won’t listen to. When this happens, I thought that being a teacher was too hard.
At this time, I thought it important to bring children going through puberty to the class.
Through these volunteer works I learned a lot about children and what they want to do,
and I have grown very much. I recommend this volunteer works for those who have a
dream of becoming a teacher or those who really love children. After volunteering you
too could feel happy and fruitful!!
