‘Nurse unemployment’ due

to medical gap

Due to the prolonged medical gap, new nurses are having difficulty finding jobs. According to the
medical community last month, among the 23 general hospitals in the metropolitan area, Chung-
Ang University Hospital was the only one to announce its intention to hire new nurses in the first
half of this year.

In addition, Kangwon National University Hospital, a local university hospital, posted a recruitment
notice, and 1,679 people applied for the notice to recruit 80 people this year, recording a competition
rate of about 21 to 1. Major university hospitals such as the Big 5 (Seoul National University, Seoul
Asan, Samsung Seoul, Severance, and Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital) usually post recruitment notices
for nurses in April or May, and university hospitals and general hospitals begin recruiting in the
second half of the year.

Nurses hired through this process are sequentially assigned after the national exam results come
out in March of the following year. This is called waiting, and the waiting period can take several
months depending on the hospital’s circumstances. The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced
in January that it would implement a “simultaneous interview system” due to concerns that some
hospitals would have a vacancy in personnel due to nurses passing the exam multiple times.
The plan is to conduct interviews at 18 general hospitals in July and 4 general hospitals in the
metropolitan area in October at the same time for the recruitment of nurses.
And even when there is an emergency patient due to a medical strike, there are no doctors in the
hospital, so I can not help it. Even then, I think that nurses should take care of emergency patients.
Therefore, if the medical strike continues all the time, I think that it is most important to protect and
guarantee the life of the patient by preventing the emergency situation, so I think that the number
of nurses should be selected much more than the existing number.
